Amman (Agenzia Fides) - The American University of Madaba and the General Secretariat for Christian educational institutions in Jordan signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at fostering the collaboration and sharing of educational paths between the university and Christian schools in the Hashimite Kingdom. The memorandum was co-signed on Monday 28 August by Professor Nabil Ayoub, President of the University of Madaba, and Father Rashid Mistrih OFM, Secretary General of the Christian educational institutions in Jordan. Bishop William Shomali, patriarchal Vicar for Jordan of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, and Father Ashraf Al-Nimri, Director General of the Latin Patriarchate Schools in Jordan, also attended the memorandum.
The memorandum aims to link the experience of the American University of Madaba – born with the financial support of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem – with the long and significant tradition of Christian educational institutions that have been operating for more than 150 years in the territories of the present Jordan. In concrete, the first form of collaboration will be represented by a large number of scholarships available to deserving students of schools linked to the Secretariat to financially support their access to the University of Madaba, including periods of study abroad offered by the University in collaboration especially with US university institutions. A similar memorandum had already been signed earlier with the General Secretariat of Christian Education Institutions in Galilee and Palestine.
The University of Madaba (American University of Madaba, AUM), is the University affiliated to the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, of which Pope Benedict blessed the first stone on May 9, 2009, and was inaugurated on May 30, 2013 in the presence of King Abdallah II. By the end of 2014, the Holy See had to intervene to take over administrative and financial problems that had marked the construction and launch of the academic institution. An ad hoc commission, set up by the Secretariat of State, had in turn entrusted to a local Administrative Committee chaired by Archbishop Giorgio Lingua, at that time Apostolic Nuncio in Jordan, the task of "closely following and coordinating the University's works up to July 2015. Last March (see Fides 4/3/2017), Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa OFM, apostolic administrator of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, addressed a letter to all members of the diocese he administered, making an explicit reference to "the mistakes that hurt the life of the Patriarchate, financially and administratively, especially concerning the American University of Madaba".
