Brasilia (Agenzia Fides) - Yesterday, August 30, a Brazilian judge, Rolando Spanholo, blocked an attempt by the president, to open up swaths of the Amazon forest to mining companies in a large reserve in the Amazon rainforest, National Reserve of Copper and Associates (Renca).
The decree was made known last week, provoking the harsh criticism of international environmental groups and the Catholic Church (see Fides 29/08/2017), that denounced incalculable damage to the ecosystem and conflicts among indigenous miners and tribes.
The judge believes that the decree was not preceded by the necessary authorization of the National Congress, as required by the Constitution, and could jeopardize the protection of the environment and local indigenous communities. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 31/08/2017)
