AFRICA/SOUTH SUDAN - The coordinator of "Justice and Peace" of the diocese of Wau arrested

Juba (Agenzia Fides) - A coordinator for "justice and peace" commission at the Roman Catholic Diocese of Wau, in South Sudan has been arrested. According to Radio Tamazuj, Natalina Andrea Mabu, was under investigations over a suspected outbreak of food poisoning on August 3 during a military seminar held at the "Garinti" military base in Wau. The seminar, organized by the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), focused on the issue of respect for human rights on behalf of the military. Three Army officers died, including the commander of operations in the Wau area, Brigadier General Mathok Akec. Other 57 military officers were hospitalized.
According to investigations, contaminated food had been prepared at a local hotel and then transported to the "Garinti" military base where the seminar was held.
At the moment there are no known reasons why charges against the "Justice and Peace" coordinator were pressed. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides, 28/8/2017)
