Borborema (Agenzia Fides) – Fr. Pedro Gomes Bezerra was found dead in his home in Borborema, in the Brazilian state of Paraibo, on the morning of August 24. The priest's body, wrapped in a sheet, was stabbed at least 29 times with a knife. According to initial investigations, the assassin knew the priest, as no evidence of theft was found and nothing was stolen. The car was found abandoned in a rural area, about fifteen miles from the scene of the crime.
The statement of the diocese of Guarabira sent to Fides, informs that the priest had been carrying out his pastoral ministry for about two years in Nossa Senhora do Carmo, in Borborema. From 1999 to 2007 he had been serving in Belem, where he had set up a nursing home, the Good Shepherd, and had given great testimony of faith and social commitment. On August 30, he would have turned 50 y and in December, he would have celebrated 24 years of priesthood. A great multitude of faithful attended his funeral, celebrated on 25 August.
