La Rioja (Agenzia Fides) - On August 4, 1976, Father Arturo Pinto and Mgr. Angelelli were returning from a celebration in honor of two priests killed. Along the way to Cordoba, two cars approached them and crushed against them. Father Pinto, reported that, upon awakening, he found the dead Bishop with several headshots. For years Angelelli's death was masked as a road accident. Only in 2009 things changed because the case was reopened that year.
41 years after his death, the community remembers his words: "Always have one ear which listens to the people and the other to the Gospel".
Mgr. Enrique Angelelli (1923-1976), the Bishop of the Diocese of La Rioja, was one of the most well-known Bishops in the Country, contrary to dictatorship. He died in a simulated car accident shortly after the establishment of the military dictatorship. After 38 years, on July 4, 2014, two senior officers were sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of the Bishop. For decades the authorities had argued that his death had been accidental. In 2015, the diocesan phase of the beatification case was opened. (See Fides 29/07/2016) (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 04/08/2017)
