AFRICA/ALGERIA - Algiers repatriates Nigerien migrants in agreement with Niamey

Algiers (Agenzia Fides) - "In order to tackle the phenomenon of irregular migration and to fight against human trafficking, the Algerian authorities have decided, in close coordination with the Nigerien authorities, repatriation operations of Nigerien citizens in an irregular position in Algeria", said the spokesman of the Algerian Foreign Minister, Benali Cherif. "Repatriation - added Cherif - are part of a series of measures taken by the Algerian government to strengthen cooperation with Sub-Saharan Africa, in particular Niger and Mali, to curb the flow of irregular migration that our country is facing".
In Algeria, irregular migrants come from sub-Saharan Africa, particularly from Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso. There are no official statistics of sub-Saharan migrants in Algeria. According to unofficial estimates, there are about 100,000.
Some of them are looking for work in Algeria, others are on the way to Europe, through Libya.
