Wolisso (Agenzia Fides) - Mapping the territory to provide better service to mothers and children. Making the best use of available resources is always a valid rule where resources are scarce and the needs are many, and studying and applying the most effective methods of intervention can make a difference to the lives of many people. With this goal Doctors with Africa Cuamm and the University of Siena, with the support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, have carried out a project in the rural districts of Wolisso, Goro and Wonchi, in Ethiopia. The goal was to map the health facilities in the area - a hospital and 77 health centers - to understand the distances that separate them and how long it would take residents to reach them on foot or by means of transport. The results were collected in the Map Atlas, a volume that was presented last June to the local health authorities and the heads of departments involved. "The atlas has been distributed to the heads of the Woreda, the districts. The text is easy to understand and makes the knowledge of the geography of our territory more immediate. It can also be used to expand knowledge and locate other needs or phenomena related to community health, as well as distances and times of access to health centers and other safe delivery services", reads a statement from an expert doctor in public health in Wolisso.
