Kinshasa (Agenzia Fides) - Over a hundred people in a Congolese village were kidnapped by an armed group. According to information sent to Agenzia Fides by CEPADHO, a local NGO, on July 26 about fifty Mai-Mai Simba fighters attacked the village of Mabuo, in the territory of Lubero, in the province of North Kivu, in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The militiamen clashed with the military in a nearby military station. In the clash, five assailants and one soldier died. But the soldiers were forced to retreat. After burning down the military station, Simba militiamen ransacked the village door to door, plundering homes, shops, and the pharmacy. The Simba forced a hundred people to follow them.
In the meantime, the political situation worsens in the DRC. Today, July 31, a protest march (see Fides 28/7/2017) was convened by the Lucha movement (Lutte pour le Changement) to demand the resignation of President Joseph Kabila, whose mandate expired on 20 December 2016. Moïse Katumbi, former governor of Katanga urged the population to participate. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides, 31/7/2017)
