Zacatecas (Agenzia Fides) – The Bishop of the diocese of Zacatecas, Mgr. Sigifredo Noriega Barceló, during his homily on Sunday, July 30, recalled the young man who died in a truck in Texas, in an attempt to find a job in the United States. He said that these are very painful events, not only for the families of the dead, but for society in general, because they "make us think about many aspects of life and emigration".
Last week, the bodies of nine illegal immigrants, among them two children, were found in the trailer of a truck parked in a gas station in San Antonio, Texas. In the trailer, the police also found another 30 people, 20 of whom are now in serious condition and one died a few days later.
"Today, Sunday - said Mgr. Noriega in note sent to Fides - we celebrate the Day against trafficking, and this has an important meaning, because these people were not suppose to travel in that way. They were looking for a better life. In my opinion, human trafficking is a new form of slavery; we need to emigrate, but it must be done in the best possible way, without any risk to life".
Mgr. Noriega Barceló pointed out that "material need is the primary cause, because we cannot produce enough wealth for our Mexico, and what there is is not well distributed; if development opportunities are lacking here, people must go else where in order to help their families".
