Ejido (Agenzia Fides) - The priests of the Catholic Church spoke yesterday July 28 with regards to a confrontation between the Bolivarian National Guard (GNB) and demonstrators in the city of Ejido, in the state of Mérida, Venezuela.
With a number of photos published by the Venezuela Bishops' Conference account on Twitter, the intervention of priests was documented who played the role of mediators on July 28, when the GNB tanks appeared near the funeral of Rafael Vergara, a young man who died in one of the many demonstrations being held in Venezuela in sign of protest. Around 3:30 pm the priests stopped the funeral and went to the guards to ask them to go away.
According to agency data, several people have died at a national level in violent clashes between demonstrators and security forces in recent days, particularly during the 48-hour general strike and various social sectors ask the government to withdraw the elections of the Constituent Assembly. Also another young man yesterday died due to a shot during a demonstration in San Cristobal, Tachira state. 113 deaths have occurred in nearly four months of protests in the country.
