AMERICA/VENEZUELA - Bishops call for non-violence and appeal to law enforcement: "Your role is to maintain peace"

Caracas (Agenzia Fides) - "In a few hours the constituent National Assembly elections will be held and the President of the Venezuelan Bishops' Conference reiterates his rejection with regards to this initiative, considering it unconstitutional and even useless, unnecessary and damaging to the Venezuelan people", is what is written in the statement by the Presidency of the Bishops' Conference of Venezuela published last night, July 27.
"Again, we raise our voice against violence, wherever it comes from. It should be pointed out that if this process is to be carried out, which we do not support, it must be done without violence. Violence can never be the way to resolve social conflicts that worsen day by day in our Venezuelan society. Excessive repression, increases more violence", reads the Bishops’ text sent to Fides.
The statement also addresses the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB): "We want to remind the FANB that your first duty is toward the people, but the facts of these days do not seem to highlight this. The FANB's role is to maintain peace. Let us not increase the suffering and anguish of so many people who want to live in peace, who want to raise their voice of protest and be listened to and want to be respected".
