OCEANIA/AUSTRALIA - www.wyd2008.org: hosting Sydney archdiocese launches World Youth Day 2008 web site

Monday, 28 November 2005

Sydney (Fides Service) - www.wyd2008.org is the address of web site opened by the hosting Catholic Church in Australia for the 23rd World Youth Day scheduled to take place in Sydney 15 - 20 July 2008. There is widespread enthusiasm for this major Catholic Church event as preparations get under way following a three year calendar drafted with the help of chief WYD organiser the Vatican based Pontifical Council for the Laity.
The web page includes the announcement by Pope Benedict XVI that chosen Syney had been chosen to host 2008 WYD, testimonials from participants at previous World Youth Days, information about imminent recruiting of volunteers, sponsors, personnel for the organisation of this assembly of Christian youth from all over the world.
The site says the archdiocese of Sydney welcomed the Holy Father’s decision and has begun building a team to organise the important event. It also gives some good reasons for holding a WYD in Australia: it will be the first WYD in Oceania, the first visit to this continent by Pope Benedict XVI, Sydney has proven organising capabilities, an active Catholic community and a great spiritual heritage. It is multi cultural city, open to dialogue, modern but respectful of tradition.
The Church in Australia is convinced that World Youth Day will have the effect of “an injection” of spiritual values for all young Australians not only Catholics and will encourage them to reflect on how spiritual values can change people’s lives and attitudes for the better. WYD will also give new impulse to Australia’s Catholic community and offer a great opportunity for evangelisation.
