Maipù (Agenzia Fides) - At least sixty thousand faithful went on a pilgrimage to the Maipù National Sanctuary on the occasion of the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Patron of Chile, celebrated yesterday, on Sunday, July 16. The main Mass “for Chile”, according to the note of the Bishops' Conference sent to Fides, was celebrated at noon by the Archbishop of Santiago, Cardinal Ricardo Ezzati, who reminded the faithful: "We are all brothers, here no one is foreign, Mary's house is our home".
Starting from this consideration, Cardinal Ezzati asked in the homily: "Where is your immigrant brother? What do you do for him? Where are your younger brothers and sisters, more than 90,000 children and teenagers who are often abandoned to their fate, without proper social protection, subjected to physical and psychological abuses. What have we done of these brothers, wounded by so many injustices? Where is your brother who, in the twenty-first century, in a society marked by progress and the wealth of a few, is rejected? What do we do with so many poor people who still live in squalid camps, with abandoned elders. Where is your brother, your sister, who do not know the joy and hope of faith, the reception of a community who believes that provides hospitality and warmth, or who, due to our shortcomings, have distanced themselves from Jesus and the community".
The Cardinal exhorted: "In this feast the Virgen del Carmen invites us to be guided by the Lord". Then he added: "Mary, Mother of the Chilean family, especially in these times of tension, asks us to learn the language of love. Only love builds, only with love the culture of acceptance and solidarity is realized. Virgen del Carmen invites all Chilean children to eliminate harsh and contemptuous language, and learn the grammar of dialogue that builds". (SL) (Agenzia Fides 17/07/2017)
