Bogotà (Agenzia Fides) - "We once again point out our condemnation for this abduction, and we ask the national Government to intervene and and carry out the necessary mediation for the release of the nun abducted and to bring her back to her community safe and sound": this is what new President of the Bishops' Conference of Colombia, His Exc. Mgr. Oscar Urbina Ortega, Archbishop of Villavicencio, in a statement sent to Fides says. The Catholic Bishops of Colombia welcomed "with joy and hope" the proof that Sister Gloria Cecilia Narvaez, kidnapped in Africa, is alive and in the brief statement reiterate that "seizure is an illegitimate practice to achieve any purpose, goes against the dignity of the person, the fundamental right to freedom, human rights and social welfare".
No person should be subjected to this harassment, "seizure will never be the way to promote truth, justice, and peace", they reiterate. "We hope that the efforts made by the Chancellery produce effective fruits in favor of Sister Glory" conclude the Bishops, inviting all believers "to continue to pray for the health of the religious and for her immediate release".
Colombian missionary Sister Gloria Cecilia Narváez, of the Franciscan Congregation of Mary Immaculate, was kidnapped by Al Qaeda in Mali on February 7 (see Fides 8 and 9/02/2017). In a video released on July 1st, the Colombian nun can be seen along with five other foreign hostages who were also kidnapped by the jihadist network (see Fides 03/07/2017).
