Juiz de Fora (Agenzia Fides) - Following yesterday's Mass, a group of five Brazilian youths belonging to the “Jovens Missionários Continentais” (JMC) community, leave today from the Brazilian Archdiocese of Juiz de Fora to go to Haiti. They are accompanied by the Archbishop of Juiz de Fora, His Exc. Mgr. Gil Antônio Moreira, and by the Bishop of Leopoldina, His Exc. José Eudes Campos do Nascimento.
As reported by the note of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference sent to Fides, "the trip to the poorest country in the Americas aims to study the possibility of creating a missionary base of the particular Church of Juiz de Fora".
The project of a missionary exchange with Haiti follows the indications which emerged from the Archdiocesan Synod of 2009, whose theme was "Archdiocese of Juiz de Fora, a Church always in mission", in addition to the many appeals launched by Pope Francis for a Church which must permanently "goes forth". The Archdiocese of Juiz de Fora is already responsible of a parish in the Brazilian diocese of Obidos, where it sends priests and lay people.
Haiti's situation continues to be worrying, although seven years have gone by since the tremendous earthquake that devastated the country, causing 200,000 deaths and the collapse of thousands of buildings. The delegation of the Brazilian Archdiocese will be in Haiti until August 5th. (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 17/07/2017)
