Dakar (Agenzia Fides) - The phenomenon of the tens of thousands of talibés children in Senegal does not seem to diminish (see Fides 31/3/2017). Although, in March 2017, over 1,500 children were removed from the streets of Dakar, hundreds of whom were returned to their families, tens of thousands continue to suffer abuse and are forced to beg. According to local sources, in some schools talibés are asked to give their money and rice. The Human Rights Watch (HRW) organization has called on the Senegalese authorities to make greater efforts to remove these small victims from the streets of the Country. The Government in 2016 had launched a program to eliminate the phenomenon. In view of the National Assembly's elections on July 30, humanitarian organizations have asked the parties to include the issue of the talibés among the priorities of their electoral programs.
