Mosul (Agenzia Fides) – After the liberation of the city of Mosul, from the militia of the self-styled Islamic State that had conquered the city in June 2014, now the ambition is "that all displaced people and the sons of religions, nationalities and creeds come back, including Christian Brothers in particular, to their homes in Mosul", because "the natural response to Daesh is to live together". This is what Iraqi Prime Minister Haider at Abadi said on Monday, 10 July, to a delegation of Christians in Mosul who he received at the headquarters of Operations Command, in the presence of some of the Iraqi armed forces and security forces. During the meeting - said a statement released from the Iraqi Prime Minister's office - Abadi stressed that "our diversity is for us reason of pride, and must be preserved and foil Daesh scheme who wanted Iraqis dye one color and tearing unity that thousands of years ago interbred it". The Iraqi prime minister highlighted that it is the government’s duty to protect citizens and provide services to them regardless of their affiliation, dealing with all Iraqis without discrimination, and coexistence between "Nineveh sons must prevail".
On Sunday, July 9, Abadi himself went to Mosul to congratulate Iraq’s armed forces for wresting the city from the Islamic State. The victory marked the formal end of a bloody campaign that lasted nearly nine months. On his return to Baghdad, Iraqi Prime Minister was welcomed by celebrating citizens on the road waving flags of Iraq (see photo). Meanwhile, Chaldean Patriarch Louis Raphael Sako congratulated the government and all the people who contributed to the liberation of Mosul. "This victory", says a statement released by official channels of the Patriarchate and sent to Agenzia Fides, "is proof that the level of challenges to be faced requires the unity of all". The Patriarch also expressed the mourning of the Chaldean Church for the civilian victims and hoped that a "time of reconciliation" begins in the country, so that it is possible to build a "strong and modern civil State".
