Karthoum (Agenzia Fides) - Following the cases of cholera registered in the White Nile and in the northern State of the Country (see Fides 14/6/2017), it is the turn of the refugee camps in South Sudan and Darfur. Deaths have been registered in the refugee camp in Kario, 35km south of Ed Daein, as well as in Khazan Jadeed, Shearia area. In a week, the first reports on the spread of cholera epidemic in northern Darfur were accompanied by reports of infection in South Darfur (Kalma camp) and east Darfur.
Since the beginning of the epidemic in the eastern and south-eastern States in Sudan, the World Health Organization and the Sudanese Ministry of Health have never referred to the pandemic as cholera, but to the less aggressive form of "acute watery diarrhea".
In South Kordofan, in total, the number of infections has risen to 207 as well as 21 deaths in Farshaya's local health center. Further infections have been reported in the western part of El Obeid, capital of North Kordofan, where the El Sayed El Makki school has been transformed into a quarantine center. People in the area have expressed concerns that this could lead to a spread of infections among students at the beginning of the school year. Some have taken into consideration the idea of extending the holiday period so as to limit further damage. (AP) (Agenzia Fides, 6/7/2017)
