EUROPE/ITALY - “Rare diseases in paediatric dermatology”: two day meeting of Italian experts and patients’ associations

Friday, 25 November 2005

Rome (Fides Service) - The Istituto Dermopatico dell’Immacolata and Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital BGCH have organised a two day meeting 25 and 26 November on “Rare diseases in paediatric dermatology”.
In fact dermatological symptoms represent in 16% of the cases, the most obvious and concerning signs of a rare pathology.
This information emerges from a case study by the BGCH department for rare diseases opened in 2003.
Since the department was opened 909 families have brought children for a diagnosis of symptoms and over 50% of the children in question were under 6 and one 5th were less than six months old.
According to the World Health Organisation rare diseases are pathologies which are often serious, invalidating and for which there is no specific treatment, with a low prevalence in Europe, less than 5 cases on every 10,000 patients. WHO estimates that there are about 6,000 “rare” pathologies. Skins diseases in paediatrics should not be underestimated because they can be signs of some serious genetic disease.
