Tuesday, 4 July 2017

Bogotà (Agenzia Fides) - After the video in which Sister Gloria Cecilia Narváez appears, kidnapped by Al Qaeda in Mali, on February 7 (see Fides 8 and 9/02/2017), the President of the Episcopal Conference Of Colombia, His Exc. Mgr. Luis Augusto Castro Quiroga, rejoiced because the nun is alive, and said that the Colombian Church will make a request to international organizations to do everything possible for her release.
"Our Bishops' Assembly, which began on Monday 3 July, will be an opportunity for us to launch an international appeal to all bodies and those who kidnapped the nun. We are talking about a nun and also a Colombian, and we hope that something can be achieved", said Mgr. Castro Quiroga, interviewed by Radio Blue who pointed out that four countries are involved in the release of the nun: France, Spain, Mali and Colombia.
The note sent to Fides also informs that the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Mary Immaculate, a community to which Sr. Gloria Cecilia belongs, has called for a prompt intervention by the Colombian national government to intensify the research.
Sister Gloria was kidnapped on the evening of February 7 in Koutiala, southern Mali, in a quiet area, not yet affected by insecurity as in other parts of the country. Around 9 pm, a group of armed men broke into the parish of Karangasso, kidnapped the nun and fled with the parish car, taking away money and computers. At the time of the kidnapping, the men who took the nun declared they were jihadists. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 04/07/2017)
