ASIA/INDONESIA - Appointment of the Bishop of the Diocese of Pangkalpinang

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – Today the Holy Father appointed Fr. Adrianus Sunarko, O.F.M., Provincial Superior and President of the Conference of Male Major Superiors in Indonesia, as Bishop of the Diocese of Pangkalpinang (Indonesia).
The new Bishop was born on December 7, 1966 in Merauke in the Archdiocese of Merauke, Papua Occidental. After attending the Minor Seminary of Mertoyudan, he completed his philosophical studies at the High School of Philosophy Driyarkara in Jakarta and the theological studies at the Wedabhakti Pontifical Faculty of Theology in Yogyakarta. He gave his perpetual vows on August 15, 1994 in the Order of Friars Minor and was ordained a priest on July 8, 1995.
He then held the following offices and academc roles: 1995-1996: Parish Vicar in Kramat (Archdiocese of Jakarta); 1996-2002: Studies in Theology at the Albert-Ludwig Universität in Freiburg, Germany; Since 2002: Professor at the Driyarkara Philosophical High School in Jakarta; 2007-2009: Vice-Provincial of the OFM for Indonesia; Since 2010: Superior of the OFM Province for Indonesia (two mandates); Since 2014: President of KOPTARI (Conference of Major Male Superiors).
The diocese of Pangkalpinang (1961), a suffragan of the archdiocese of Palembang, has an area of 30,442 sq km and a population of 3,345,000 inhabitants, of whom 58,000 are Catholics. There are 14 parishes, 76 priests (61 diocesan and 15 religious), 78 nuns, and 15 seminarians. (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 28/6/2017)
