ASIA/KOREA - Appointment of the Bishop Coadjutor of the diocese of Cheju

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – Today the Holy Father appointed Rev. Pius Moon Chang-woo, Headmaster of the Shinsong Girls' Middle School in Cheju, as Bishop Coadjutor of the diocese of Cheju (Korea).
The new Bishop was born on March 15, 1963 in Cheju. He completed his philosophical and theological studies at the Major Seminary in Gwangju, obtaining a Master in Theology (1994-1996). He was ordained a priest on 10 February 1996 for the Diocese of Cheju. Since his priestly ordination, he has held the following offices and academic roles: 1996-1997: Parish Vicar of Seomoon Parish; 1997-1998: Parish Vicar of Chungang Parish; 1998-1999: Parish of Choongmoon Parish; 1999-2006: Director of the Diocesan Office for Youth and Education and of the Diocesan Students' Association, Director of the Office for Catechesis and Migrants; 2006-2016: Professor and Spiritual Father at the Catholic University of Gwangju; 2010-2015: PhD studies; Since 2016: Headmaster of the Shinsong Girls' Middle School.
The Diocese of Cheju (1977) is suffragan of the Archdiocese of Gwangju. It has an area of 1,849 sq km and a population of 641,355 inhabitants, of whom 75,579 are Catholics. There are 27 parishes, 47 diocesan priests, 7 religious priests, 17 religious men, 108 religious women and 13 major seminarians. (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 28/6/2017)
