Cairo (Agenzia Fides) - Controversy and sarcasm in Egypt increase with regards to the bill submitted on Tuesday 13 June to the Egyptian Parliament to forbid the conferral of Western and "foreign" names to Egyptian babies. Even Coptic Orthodox Bishop Raphael, Secretary of the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Coptic Church, also intervened, pointing out that the initiative seems to be borne by lazy people who have nothing more urgent to do than talk about the names to be given to babies.
The bill asks to sanction those who give their babies non-Arab and foreign names with fines or even with the arrest of up to six months". "Giving those names to children and abandoning Arab names", said Bedier Abdel Aziz, deputy promoter of the bill presented to Parliament", will lead us to a loss of our social and cultural roots".
