Canindeyú (Agenzia Fides) – On June 15, Mgr. Mario Melanio Medina Salinas, Bishop Emeritus of San Juan Bautista de las Misiones, attended the celebration to remember the 5 years since the Massacre of Curuguaty. On June 15, 2012, in an attempt to evict the peasants who had taken possession of the lands of Marina Cué, claiming that the land belonged to the state and should be assigned to them, while Campos Morumbi society, of the late deceased Senator Blas Riquelme claimed property, 17 people were killed, 11 peasants and 6 police officers (see Fides 13/06/2016, 18/06/2012).
After five years, on this occasion, Mgr. Medina expressed harsh words against former president and current Senator Fernando Lugo, pointing out that he has betrayed all the promises. In an interview with "Ultima Hora" newspaper in Canindeyú, released on the site of the celebration, Mgr. Medina said: "As President of the Republic he did absolutely nothing for peasants or agrarian reform for indigenous people, now as senator, what project has he submitted for Curuguaty or in favor of Guahory favor? Nothing".
Just when the five years of the massacre are being commemorated, still an unresolved case and one of the landmark events in the fight for land in Paraguay, Fernando Lugo was elected Senate President. His predecessor in this office, who at the time had spoken openly of massacre accusing Lugo, was for this reason removed from his office by Lugo himself. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 17/06/2017)
