San Yuan (Agenzia Fides) - “Christians are called to live the Gospel and through social service take part in the Church’s mission to spread the Good News” said Fr Zhang Hong Shun, parish priest at Hu Jia Zhai parish San Yuan diocese in the province of Shannxi, during the first session of a course for young Catholics “Living the Word of God with social service”. Over 120 young people took the course in the following subjects: Sacred Scripture, liturgy, the Church’s social doctrine, and ‘how to live as Christians’. At the end of the course one participant said “The course helped us to acquire deeper understanding and love for the Word of God as a source of strength to live the Christian life in the truth”. San Yuan diocese started as a Franciscan mission and in 1948 there were 12,474 Catholics. Today the community has grown to 35,000 Catholics gathered in 40 parishes and assisted by 34 priests and about 80 women religious (source: “Guide to the Catholic Church in China 2004” China Catholic Communication ).
