Caracas (Agenzia Fides) - On Thursday, June 8, the Presidency of the Venezuelan Bishops' Conference (CEV) will be in Rome to meet with the Pope in the Vatican. "The meeting intends to discuss with him the dire situation that Venezuela is experiencing, which the Pope already knows through the Apostolic Nunciature – says the CEV communiqué sent to Fides -. Finally, it will also be an opportunity to express the bonds of solidarity and to thank Pope Francis for his prayers, his closeness, and his concern for Venezuela, as stated by the Bishops' Conference of Venezuela in various exhortations and communications".
Archbishop Diego Padrón of the Archdiocese of Cumaná, the president of the conference, will lead the delegation to the summit with the pope. He will be accompanied by His Exc. Mgr. José Luis Azuaje, the conference’s first vice president; and His Exc. Mgr. of Mario Moronta, the second vice president. They will be joined by the conference’s secretary general, His Exc. Mgr. Victor Hugo Basabe, and Venezuela’s Cardinals—Jorge Urosa Savino and Baltazar Porras, honorary presidents of CEV.
The CEV's latest statement of 18 May 2017 called for respect for the Constitution and to announce elections as a solution to the crisis, reiterating that the Venezuelan people want respect for the conditions accepted but unfulfilled: opening of humanitarian channels, general elections, release of political prisoners and respect for the National Assembly.
