Panama (Agenzia Fides) - Of the over 23,000 child workers surveyed in the Panama Republic, 64% are engaged in agricultural activities. For this reason, the Ministry of Labor and Development this year has focused its campaign to eradicate child labor in remote areas of the Country. The theme of the 2017 campaign was: "Boys and girls have rights, let us protect them from child labor". According to information sent to Fides, 23 institutions took part, with the aim of bringing children back to school and offering them concrete opportunities for development. According to the latest research by the National Institute of Statistics and Census, there was a 12% drop in child labor in the Country. The International Labor Organization defines "all kinds of work that deprive the children of their childhood and dignity and which undermines their physical and psychological development" as child labor. Panama's goal is to become the first Latin American country to eliminate child labor. (AP) (Agenzia Fides, 5/6/2017)
