Addis Abeba (Agenzia Fides) - The NGO World Vision has launched an alarm on the urgent need for aid for 25 million people and 700,000 children on the verge of dying due to hunger in eastern Africa. The severe drought that is hitting the area causes lack of water and grass and consequently leads to a drastic decline in livestock.
The production of milk and meat in households is very poor and the prices of flour in the markets have increased dramatically. World Vision also points out that the general reduction in access to food, together with the lack of water, has caused an increase in epidemics and mortality throughout the area.
Faced with this emergency, the NGO has increased its aid in Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia and South Sudan in order to reach more than two million people with food, drinking water supplies and medical assistance. They are also creating safe spaces for children, helping them to continue their education even in refugee camps. "Children are dying in Sudan and Somalia and many others are at risk in Kenya and Ethiopia. We cannot wait any longer", reads a note from the Director of World Vision Human Resources in East Africa sent to Fides. Overall, according to the NGO, more than 3 and a half million children in these countries suffer from severe malnutrition and 700,000 from an acute form of malnutrition.
