AFRICA/SUDAN - Cholera emergency in the capital of northern Kordofan

El Obeid (Agenzia Fides) - Cholera cases were reported for the first time in El Obeid, capital of the state of northern Kordofan. So far 68 people have been hospitalized. According to local medical sources, the first infections date back two days ago in Karima and El Wehda districts. The disease has spread in epidemic proportions in the state of White Nile. In Kosti, seven people died only a few days ago; Eye Hospital has been transformed into an isolation center for the reception of a growing number of cases: so far 183 patients have been hospitalized.
In the village of Asalaya, a school has been turned into an isolation center for 126 infected people. The State of White Nile is unable to provide drinking water and, so far, more than 20 people have died for "acute watery diarrhea" as well as thousands of people who have been infected. Since the beginning of May, cases continue to increase in nearby Sennar. Hundreds of cases of "acute watery diarrhea" were recorded earlier in the year in East Sudan and Khartoum (see Fides 29/3/2017). (AP) (Agenzia Fides, 24/5/2017)
