Chocò (Agenzia Fides) - "Now or never again! This is what the people in front of the opportunity to talk and deal with the high authorities of the Colombian state say", said Mgr. Juan Carlos Barreto Barreto, Bishop of the diocese of Quibdó Western Colombia, speaking to a group of journalists yesterday, May 22. The Bishop asked the government to resume dialogue as soon as possible, both with Chocó and Buenaventura, to put an end to the general strike. "People claim their rights that are fundamental and if they are not heard through normal channels, sometimes it is necessary to resort to social mobilization", emphasized the Bishop.
The government committed itself in this area in 2016, promising a figure of 720 million pesos, a promise never maintained. The population demands more than anything else the construction of the hospital and the punishment of those who are corrupt at a local level.
"The Civic Committee insisted on the fact that it also demonstrates against the corrupt in Chocó, because there is no clear awareness that corruption must be rejected at all levels. But this does not mean that the community has to pay and must be deprived of its necessities", said Bishop Barreto. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 23/05/2017)
