AMERICA/BRAZIL - "For ethics in politics", even the Bishops denounce corruption in Brazil

Brasilia (Agenzia Fides) - Members of the Presidency of the National Bishops' Conference of Brazil (CNBB) published an official note on Friday, May 19, entitled "For ethics in politics", which states that the Conference "joins the bishops and communities throughout the country" and follows "with amazement and indignation" the serious political corruption allegations approved by the Supreme Court.
In the note, the Bishops say that "such accusations require rigorous inquiry, always in accordance with the constitutional guarantees". Verify the facts, the perpetrators of illicit acts must be held responsible. Vigilance and political participation of our communities, social movements and society as a whole, can greatly contribute to clarifying the facts and defending ethics, justice and the common good".
"It is also necessary that solutions to the current crisis must respect and strengthen the rule of law. We ask our communities to participate responsibly and peacefully in political life, contributing to the attainment of justice and peace and praying for Brazil", conclude the members of the Presidency.
Brazil is going through a very delicate moment after the national press published the recording of last March's interview between President Michel Temer and entrepreneur Joesley Batista who raised the scandal on paying a bribe to the former president of the Chamber of Commerce, Eduardo Cunha. The shadow of corruption has raised a wave of protest in several cities in the country: from Sao Paulo to Brasilia, Recife and Rio de Janeiro.
