Bogotà (Agenzia Fides) - One of the purposes of the XXXVI Ordinary Assembly of the Latin American Bishops' Council (CELAM) just completed in San Salvador (see Fides 13/05/2017) was to carry out an assessment of the work done so far by the various pastoral sectors of CELAM. Among these there is the Latin American Socio-Pastoral Observatory. According to vidanuevadigital.com, CELAM's Global Plan for 2015-2019, has the priority to "strengthen CELAM’s Observatory to manage the work of research centers and observers on the continent".
Looking at the work done, what was highlighted was the launch of the new Observatory website in December, and the first meeting of Observatories and Research Centers in Latin America and the Caribbean, from 20 to 22 April, organized by the Social School of CELAM, responsible for the Observatory. The purpose of the meeting was to know the work that each develops and to walk towards a common continental configuration. There were 15 organizations, including Observers and Research Centers of 10 countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic and Uruguay), as well as the Vatican, that welcomed the initiative of the Social School.
"We have centered our mission on what we call the prophetic method of analysis of reality, which includes two dimensions", said uruguaya Susana Nuin, director of the Observatory in a long interview. "First of all, the need to observe reality from different perspectives of analysis, denouncing injustices and all that leads to the 'culture of death.' Secondly, let's be careful to see where God is revealing himself in history ... as we want to help build the 'geopolitics of hope' on the continent. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 16/05/2017)
