AMERICA/MEXICO - Priest stabbed in the cathedral immediately after Mass

Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) – Fr. Miguel Angel Machorro, who had just finished celebrating Mass at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Mexico D.F. was stabbed three times on the altar by a thirty-year-old man. According to witnesses, when the priest cried for help, some of the faithful immediately called for first-aid, while another group stopped the aggressor and waited for the arrival of the security forces.
The Mexican Episcopal Conference, according to information gathered by Fides, confirmed the serious incident and the name of the priest. The Archdiocese of Mexico, in a brief statement, firmly condemned the aggression and the Archbishop, Cardinal Norberto Rivera, asked to pray for the priest's health, whose conditions are serious.
A first report by the Mexico City Security Secretariat informs only of the name of the attacker, John Rock Schild, without giving any news of his nationality or the reasons of the gesture. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 16/05/2017)
