Coro (Agenzia Fides) – Mgr. Roberto Lückert, Archbishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of Coro (Venezuela), believes that the country can find peace if there are elections for governors and mayors. This could decrease the tension and stop the repression and violence that erupted in recent days as a result of the decisions of the House of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ), which limit constitutional immunity and deprive the National Assembly of its powers.
Elections, which according to the National Election Board (CNE) should be held this year after last year's postponement, could lead to constructive dialogue between President Nicolás Maduro and various opposition sectors, the Archbishop notes. "I think the government can no longer bear the pressure of demonstrations", he added.
With the judgments of the TSJ, the government wants to lead the country towards a dictatorship: "This is what they want to impose here, a dictatorship disguised as democracy", said Archbishop Lückert in an interview published yesterday by La Verdad newspaper and sent to Fides. "The amount of tear gas that the government is using to silence the protests is scandalous", Mgr. Roberto Lückert said, "but they will not be able to stop them, people are tired, for 18 long years the situation worsens every day, and now there is anxiety because there is no food, no security, and of course people do not want this, so they protest, to look for a way out of this crisis".
