Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – Cardinal Angelo Amato, S.D.B., Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, was received this morning in audience by the Holy Father who authorized the Congregation to promulgate several Decrees, including the "Heroic virtues of the Servant of God Francesco Saverio Nguyên Van Thuân, Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church".
Born on April 17, 1928 in Huê, Vietnam, Van Thuân was ordained a priest on June 11, 1953. Named by Paul VI titular Archbishop of Vadesi and Coadjutor of Saigon (Thành Phô Chi Minh, Hôchiminh Ville) on April 24, 1975, after a few months, with the beginning of the Communist regime, he was arrested and put in prison. He lived in prison for 13 years, until November 21, 1988, without trial, and spent 9 in isolation. During his long period of isolation in Hanoi, kept under watch by two guards, he had collected all the pieces of paper found, realizing an agenda on which he had reported more than 300 phrases of the Gospel, celebrating the Eucharist on the palm of his hand, and also creating small Christian communities. He was released on November 21, 1988, with the appointment as coadjutor Archbishop of Saigon, on November 24, 1994 he was appointed vice president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and then became President in 1998.
