EUROPE/ITALY - Campus Bio-Medic: opens academic year 2005-2006 with celebrations for new hospital under construction and start of building on research centre

Rome (Fides Service) - Wednesday 23 November at 11.30, to mark the opening of the academic year 2005-2006, Campus Bio-Medico University will celebrate only 11 months after the laying of the foundation stone, the closing of the roof of the University hospital’s new site. The hospital will have 400 beds, 18 operating theatres, 70 outpatients and first aid units for a total initial investment of about 250 million Euro from donors and public interventions. On the same day there will be the launching of work on a research centre with 9,000mt of laboratories and research departments.
The project also includes rooms for practical exercises, colleges for students, a residence for outpatients and family members, a library, a meeting hall and sports field over a total area of 60 hectares or two football fields. In the same area there is already the Centre for the Health of the Aged, 6,000mt on land donated by Alberto Sordi, with medical and rehabilitation units, a department of Geriatrics and Gerontology and rehabilitation, a library, gym, a handcrafts centre and day centre for the elderly.
The Campus is based on inter disciplinary richness which recognises as a theme of common interest “medicine, a science at the service of humanity” and in 11 years of existence has developed in the areas of didactics, assistance and research. Opened at the request OPus Dei Prelate Bishop Alvaro del Portillo and following the style of active charity of Saint Josemaría Escrivá, the Campus is open to all and to the national and international community, thanks to the formation of students and health professionals and thanks to research projects in collaboration with industries.
