Tegucigalpa (Agenzia Fides) - Lack of food, access to basic health services, drinking water and hygiene are some of the causes that year after year favor the increase of chronic childhood malnutrition in Honduras . According to the United Nations Children's Fund report, 90,000 Honduran children suffer chronic mulnutrition for whom there is no sufficient medical staff in hospitals.
Despite assistance programs, donations by foreign governments and NGOs, the number and percentage of childhood malnutrition in the country continues to increase: about 8 million people. Western departments where food is not produced are those who suffer the most. Children from different Honduran ethnic groups are the most affected by chronic malnutrition. According to World Food Program, 20 Honduran children out of 100 are victims of chronic malnutrition, most of whom are less than 5 years of age. (AP) (Agenzia Fides, 3/5/2017)
