AMERICA/MEXICO - Cardinal Robles Ortega: Authorities must monitor the security of citizens

Tuesday, 2 May 2017

Guadalajara (Agenzia Fides) - After numerous attempts of theft, which took place recently and made public through social networks, and after the written messages on walls in at least two neighborhoods in Tonala and Zapopan, Cardinal Archbishop of Guadalajara, José Francisco Robles Ortega, pointed out that the authorities have the responsibility of exercising justice. At the same time he asked the authorities to ensure the security of citizens.
The Cardinal's statements, according to information sent to Fides, were made after the Sunday Mass celebrated on April 30, to comment on one of these cases: the attack of traders to two women stealing in Mercato Libertad in Guadalajara, Jalisco.
Cardinal Robles Ortega pointed out that lynching is a sign of a society without authority, because it is the authorities' obligation to watch over the security and protect the rights of citizens. Finally, he acknowledged that people's emotions is a reaction to a situation of insecurity and abandonment that they feel: "If authorities fail to fulfill their duties, there is a risk that society will take measures, and perhaps they will not be the most adequate".
