Cali (Agenzia Fides) - An appeal for the protection of children's rights was launched by local authorities during the Childhood Day, just celebrated in Colombia. Violence, child labor and sexual abuse are the scourges that most affect these young people. Cali's Health Secretariat reports that during 2016 874 sexual assaults were reported against minors, girls were the main victims. 45% between 10 to 13 years of age, and 33% between 5 and 9. For 97% of the cases the abuse was carried out by a family member.
Another wake-up call reported by the authorities is the exploitation of child labor which, according to estimates, registered 3.4 million Colombian girls engaged in domestic activities. During Childhood Day, local authorities prepared a series of events and activities that involved parents with their children. (AP) (Agenzia Fides, 2/5/2017)
