San Fernando de Montecristi (Agenzia Fides) – Demonstrations by a social movement of protest against the incompetence of the authorities cannot destabilise a government, the only thing which can endanger the stability of the government of the Dominican Republic is corruption, says Bishop Diómedes Espinal de León of the diocese of Mao-Monte Cristi. "I believe the people have a right to demonstrate. I do not believe this can destabilise the government … because if a government is strong and convinced that what it does is right, demonstrations on the part of the people will never succeed in destabilising it " the Bishop said yesterday during a meeting with the media to discuss the situation in the country.
According to information sent to Fides, Bishop Espinal said this in reply to journalists with regard to a statement issued by Minster of the Interior, Carlos Amarante Baret, who said protest movements aim to destabilise the government of Danilo Medina. "The two are in no way connected" the Bishop replied, adding that corruption feeds social inequality and this is what leads to instability .
In the Dominican Republic, the Green Movement organised several demonstrations including a march on 22 January, considered the largest popular demonstration in history of the country. The general goal of the Movement is to stop corruption and impunity by reawakening social awareness and sense of patriotism. Last Sunday, 23 April, there was another large demonstration in support of the Green Movement’s call for transparency regarding certain economic operations by the government.
