AFRICA/NIGERIA - Jesuit abducted on 18 April, released

Abuja (Agenzia Fides)- The Jesuit priest, Fr. Samuel Okwuidegbe, aged 50, abducted by unidentified persons on 18 April on the road from Benin City to Onitsha, was released on Saturday 22 April. The details of his release remain unknown.
In recent years several priests and religious have been abducted in Nigeria for extortion, especially in the south of the country. The Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria has formally prohibited the payment of ransom in cases of abduction of Catholic clergy. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 25/4/2017)
