ASIA/HONG KONG - Divine Word Missionaries mark 130 years of presence in Hong Kong

Hong Kong (Fides Service) - Over 500 people wearing ‘I am a SVD Friend’ T shirts took part in celebrations to mark 130 years of presence of the Divine Word Missionaries in Holy Family Catholic parish in Hong Kong. The solemn Mass was presided by Superior SVD Chinese province Fr. Edwards.
The Congregation of the Divine Word Missionary was founded by Fr Arnold Janssen on 8 September 1875 in Steyl (Holland). Arnold Janssen and Fr Giuseppe Freinademetz, one of the first SVD missionaries to go to China were canonised by Pope John Paul II on 5 October 2003. Today the congregation has 6,000 members in 60 different countries, including 2,000 in Asia in China, South Korea, Philippines, Japan, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Taiwan following the teaching of Saint Arnold “Proclaiming the Good News is the greatest act of charity”. The present superior general is Filipino father Antonio Pernia.
In China Divine Word Missionaries work in the field of cultural and academic mutual exchange and enrichment. In Hong Kong and Taiwan they are involved in parish work and spiritual assistance for immigrants.
