Kampala (Agenzia Fides) - The Ugandan army has put an end to the capture of Joseph Kony, leader of the LRA (Lord's Resistance Army), a guerrilla movement originally from north Uganda that has for years been raging in parts of South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic.
The Ugandan militants are withdrawing from the latter Country after American soldiers participating in the Kony hunt have also been repatriated.
According to a Uganda military spokesman, Kony has remained with only less than 100 fighters and is "weak and ineffective. He has not posed a significant threat to Uganda's security in North Uganda in particular for some time".
In 2013, the UN estimated that the LRA killed more than 100,000 people and kidnapped more than 60,000 in 25 years of activity. (LM) (Agenzia Fides 20/4/2017)
