AMERICA/BOLIVIA - The Episcopal Conference: "The judicial elections must not be politically manipulated"

Thursday, 20 April 2017

La Paz (Agenzia Fides) - The Bolivian Bishops' Conference (CEB) has asked through a brief message of its Secretary, Fr. José Fuentes, addressed to the civil community and the Bolivian government that the judicial elections on October 22 "must not be politically manipulated". It will be the second time in the history of Bolivia that this election takes place in which the highest authorities of the Supreme Court, the Council of Magistrates, the Agroambiental Tribunal are elected. The first elections were held on October 16, 2011.
In the Communiqué sent to Fides, dated April 19, it is recalled that in 2011, the CEB had warned of a number of errors in the electoral process, but its comments were never heard. On that occasion the majority voted an unmarked ballot paper. "In a democratic state, justice must be independent, every element that cooperates with this kind of justice is welcome, because our democracy will be healthier", said the Secretary General of the CEB.
