Iquitos (Agenzia Fides) – The Catholic community in Iquitos, a town at the heart of Peru’s Amazon forest, offered special prayers during yesterday’s Palm Sunday mass for a political and social solution to be found to the crisis in Venezuela, for God to comfort the victims of natural disasters in Peru and also the victims of the terrorist attack in Egypt.
Bishop Miguel Olaortúa Laspra, O.S.A., Apostolic Vicar of Iquitos, was clear in his address to few but efficient local media regarding the sentiments of the Catholic community: to show solidarity towards the people of Venezuela in the serious condition in the country. Although geographically distant the local Catholic community, Bishop Olaortúa Laspra told the press, prayed for Egypt, for the victims of such tragic senseless violence, and for Peru, where natural disasters caused by the Niño costero (coast winds) phenomenon left numerous families homeless, and he encouraged his people to continue to show solidarity to their brothers and sisters.
