AFRICA/MALI - No news of Sister Cecilia two months after her kidnapping, despite the indictment of 4 people

Friday, 7 April 2017 kidnappings

Bamako (Agenzia Fides) - "Where's our Sister Gloria? Who are her kidnappers? And who are those who still hold her?" These are the questions of the Diocese of Karangasso, two months after the kidnapping of Sister Gloria Cecilia Narváez Argoty, Colombian religious of the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Mary Immaculate, kidnapped on February 7 in Karangasso in southern Mali (see Fides 08/02/2017).
The statement makes us understand that the religious was transferred by her captors to another group that now holds her in custody.
The diocese also complains of having learned on April 3 by "the press" that four persons were formally accused of the kidnapping: the parish cook ("for 30 years at the service of the nuns"), two ambulance drivers of the clinic and a Catholic parishioner of Karangasso.
"Despite these facts, the questions of where Sister Cecilia is and who is still holding her as a prisoner remain", said the statement.
The diocese invites everyone to intensify their prayers for the release of the religious. The Bishops of Mali have today announced a novena in all the dioceses of the Country "to entrust Sister Gloria and her captors to the Lord's protection". (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 07/04/2017)
