AMERICA/COLOMBIA - Landslide in Mocoa: Nuncio celebrates Mass for the victims, aid from the Bishops' Conference

Bogota (Agenzia Fides) - According to figures of the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences of Colombia, the number of confirmed deaths caused by the mudslide that flooded the town of Mocoa, in the south of the country has risen to 293. The injured are 332. "There are still many who are missing, and 300 families are homeless, many have lost everything they had. There is no water and electricity and the bad weather has damaged some of the few roads", said the director of Caritas Social Pastoral Secretariat of the Colombian Church, Mgr. Héctor Fabio Henao Gaviria.
His Exc. Mgr. Luis Augusto Castro Quiroga, President of the Episcopal Conference of Colombia (CEC), announced that the funds raised during the Lenten Campaign, will be devoted to the community of Mocoa. This morning, April 6, Archbishop Ettore Balestrero, Apostolic Nuncio in Colombia will celebrate Mass at the Cathedral of St. Miguel Arcángel in the capital of Putumayo, in memory of the victims of the tragedy and in solidarity with their families and all those affected. After the celebration, the Nuncio will visit the reception centers where they will meet the victims of the landslide. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 06/04/2017)
