AMERICA/MEXICO - The Bishops call to vote and ask candidates to avoid "foul play"

Wednesday, 5 April 2017

Xalapa (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishops that make up the ecclesiastical province of Xalapa have invited the candidates of the 212 places in the region to avoid "foul play", unfounded attacks or lack of respect during the election campaign. They reminded the community that this kind of bad attitude "does not correspond to a serious and mature democracy and makes social harmony more difficult in the future".
They also called on the population to participate in the next elections in which all the mayors will be renewed. The priests of the province have been asked to avoid everything that may be or appear as support to a particular candidate or party.
"Therefore celebrations to ask for the success of a campaign, or to give thanks for the success of a particular candidate are forbidden", said the statement sent to Fides.
On June 4, 2017 the municipal elections in Coahuila, State of Mexico, Nayarit and Veracruz will be held. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 05/04/2017)
