Cairo (Agenzia Fides) - An immediate condemnation of the terrorist attack that on Monday, April 3 hit Saint Petersburg was expressed by the University of Al Azhar, the main theological and academic center of Sunni Islam. In a statement released a few hours after the attack, al Azhar drew the urgent need to fight terrorism with appropriate international measures that curb the flow of arms and resources directed to the apparatus of terror.
On Sunday, April 2, Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyib, Grand Imam of al-Azhar, had also expressed the urgent need during the meeting with a delegation led by Peter Thompson, current President of the General Assembly of the United Nations. On that occasion, Sheikh al Tayyib had also acknowledged that interreligious dialogue is not enough to counter the spread of terrorism if it is not accompanied by global policies based on the principle of justice. Al Tayyib also claimed the efforts made in recent years by Al-Azhar to consolidate channels of dialogue and sharing with many churches and Christian institutions, starting from the Catholic Church. Coinciding with the visit of Pope Francis in Egypt, scheduled for next 28 and 29 April, the Bishop of Rome and the Grand Imam will hold a speech addressed to the participants in an international Conference on peace organized under the auspices of the University of Al Azhar .
