AMERICA/MEXICO - Priest kidnapped, a high ransom demand

Thursday, 30 March 2017

Tamaulipas (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishop of Tampico, His Exc. Mgr. José Luis Martinez Dibildox, reported yesterday, March 29, the kidnapping of 40-year-old Fr. Oscar Lopez Navarro.
According to the Bishop's statements to the press, on Tuesday evening, March 28, the priest who carries out his ministry in the parish of San José Obrero, Altamira, was kidnapped at the entrance of the priests’ residence. The criminals have already contacted other priests with the request for a high ransom.
According to information sent to Fides, Mgr. Dibildox acknowledged that insecurity is increasing in Tamaulipas and has even reached the Church: "Unfortunately crime increases and many people have had to leave the city, move to other places. Until today they had respected the Church, but as we see, even priests are not respected, those who are giving their lives for the good, for the people", said the Bishop.
Just a few days ago, on March 26, Fr. Felipe Carrillo Altamirano was killed in an attack, (see Fides 28/03/2017). (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 30/03/2017)
